Yoto Mini Review: Kid-friendly Story and Music Player

A soft look at the Yoto Mini (2024 Edition). Does it actually make traveling with infants and toddlers easier?

I bought the Yoto Mini for my three-year-old to help with traveling for the holidays. The quality of the Yoto Mini, the audio cards, the sound, etc. exceeded my expectations. The kiddo loved it, and 10 months later still uses it every day.

Why We Brought It Home

Even though my toddler had done well on long flights in the past, I wanted something as a backup to keep her engaged on our flight to visit family for the holidays. I wanted something that limited screentime and was easy to use. Our friends recommended the Yoto Mini because their daughter loves it.

I never heard of the Yoto Mini, but on paper it was just what we were looking for, plus it had bonus features like a noise machine. Luckily, it was on sale, and I bought the Yoto Mini (2024 Edition) + Starter Pack for Little Kids Bundle on sale for $60. At the time of this writing, that bundle is $95, so it was a good sale and worth buying for the holidays.

The Everyday Feel

The Yoto Mini is lightweight and durable. I was afraid the quality would be cheap, and I’d have to replace the audio cards often. But I’m happy with the ease of use and how both the Yoto Mini and audio cards have survived the drops for close to a year.

My three-year-old figured out how to snap in the audio cards, turn it on, and adjust the volume quickly. After 10 months of daily use, she continues to enjoy playing the stories every day, especially in the nighttime stories before bed. I thought she’d get tired of the initial audio cards we bought, but we haven’t bought any besides the ones from the bundle and one set of Llama Llama Collection.

In addition, the Yoto Mini is advertised as a travel-friendly device for kids that can replace many devices. It acts as an alarm, noise machine, Bluetooth speaker, and can play stories from the Yoto mobile app. We found that for a short trip, these travel-friendly features work fine, but they aren’t enough to replace your regular devices on a daily basis. But it’s definitely a bonus to not need to bring a bunch of devices for these shorter trips.

A Few Quiet Details

  • Audio Cards: The audio cards are heavy-duty and easily snap into the card slot. They show a pixelated image related to the story on the Yoto Mini display. With the app, you can download the stories from the cards and play them there, so you don’t need to worry about losing the cards.
  • Speaker: For a small device, the speaker is pretty good quality. It’s not a low-end speaker and is good for the stories. If you’re not picky about audio quality, then you can use it as a Bluetooth speaker to play music, etc., but it’s not going to replace a higher-end Bluetooth speaker. For travel in public places, you can also plug in headphones.
  • The Size: It fits perfectly in the hands of our toddler, and it’s the perfect size for traveling so it doesn’t take up much packing space.
  • The Stories: Yoto has a ton of variety when it comes to the stories, music, etc. that you can purchase, and they continuously add new ones. It’ll be difficult to run out of new stories for your Yoto as long as you have the budget to purchase them.

The Low Lights

The Yoto Mini markets itself as a device that replaces a bunch of other devices; however, the features beyond playing the cards aren’t the most intuitive to use. For example, setting up the alarms properly or connecting the Yoto Mini as a Bluetooth speaker aren’t as straightforward as using a regular alarm and Bluetooth speaker. Currently, I’d consider these “bonus” features and not core Yoto Mini features.

The costs for buying new stories can add up. You have two main options: buy the physical cards as needed, or purchase a monthly subscription. The subscription model is similar to Audible, where you get a monthly credit and can buy cards at a discount. For us, we don’t buy cards frequently enough to justify the subscription.

Finally, be aware that the pre-2024 Yoto Mini devices were recalled for an overheating battery issue that caused injury to users. After close to a year, we haven’t had any issues with our updated 2024 device, but you should avoid buying the older model secondhand.

Is It Worth the Space?

At the discounted price I bought it at, I’d buy the Yoto Mini (2024 Edition) + Starter Pack for Little Kids Bundle again in a heartbeat. If you don’t need it immediately, the Yoto has periodic sales, so it could be worth waiting for a sale. At full price, I still think it’s worth it, especially given the durability, daily value, and space it saves during travel.
