What could your kid's Trump Account become?

The $1,000 federal seed plus whatever you add, compounded to adulthood. Move the dials, watch it grow.

Up to the $5,000 yearly cap. About a month.

The long-run stock market has averaged roughly 7% before inflation. 6% is a common planning number. Recent years have run hotter - that rarely lasts 18.

How this works

  • The $1,000 federal seed applies to kids born January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028. The calculator adds it automatically for those years.
  • Your contributions are capped at $5,000 per year, from money already taxed. We assume you contribute through age 18, then let it ride.
  • Values are nominal, not inflation-adjusted. A dollar at 30 will buy less than a dollar today.
  • The account is locked until your child turns 18. This is not a diaper fund.
  • In the year your child turns 18, the account automatically becomes a Traditional IRA in their name and they take control. They can instead elect to convert it to a Roth IRA, which can be tax-free while the balance is under their standard deduction. Either way the money stays invested - the projections above don't change.
  • Projections are illustrations, not promises. Real returns vary year to year.

Not financial, tax, or investment advice. Rules reflect the program as it stands now and may change. Read the walkthrough in How to Claim Your Baby's Trump Account, see how it compares to a 529, start a 529 from zero, or run the 529 numbers.

Common questions

Who gets the $1,000?

Children born January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028. The Treasury deposits the $1,000 into a Trump Account opened in the child's name - a parent has to claim it; it doesn't arrive automatically.

Can I have both a Trump Account and a 529?

Yes, and for most families that's the answer - claim the free $1,000 first, then decide how education savings fits alongside it. We compared the two accounts in detail here.

What's the most I can put in?

$5,000 per year in additional contributions, on top of the $1,000 seed. Contributions are after-tax money.
